Brook Jones (Cohort 23) presented at the Yale Bouchet Conference on Diversity and Graduate Education in April. The theme of the conference was Then and Now: Historicizing
the Contemporary State of Diversity in Higher
Education. Brook presented her work, “Assimilation vs. Identity Adaptation: The Impact of Racial Identity Centrality.”

 

Cohort 19 colleagues and friends Dr. Hal Metcalfe and Dr. Michael Pobat had the opportunity to co‐present a paper on ethics, leadership and courage. The paper was presented on April 26 at the Chesapeake Bay Organizational Development Network (CBODN) Conference held at George Mason University. The theme for the paper and the conference was Creating Courageous Practitioners to focus on individual consultant/
practitioners who seek to support organizatitions, leaders, systems, and communitities.

 

Dr. Annette Rahael (Cohort 20) has been selected as a Family Owned Business Research Scholar for 2013‐14 by the Family Owned Business Research Institute of the Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley State University to conduct research
on shared leadership and Co‐CEOs in family owned businesses. These awards are based on a research proposal competion that includes rigorous screening and blind reviews. This is a one‐year appointment beginning May 15, 2013 with a stipend to conduct and disseminate research on shared leadership. Dr. Andrea Casey is the co‐researcher on this proposal.

 

Dr. Fritz Kraus (Cohort 16) has had two papers accepted for presentation at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 2013 International Collaboration and Technology Conference, May 20‐24 2013, San Diego, CA. The two papers, “The DNA of Preparedness” and “Collaboration and Technology ‐ The Key to Developing an Effective Coordinating Environment” are being presented within the Emergency Management/Disaster Response track and in a general session.

 

Karen Nestor (Cohort 23) and Dr. Scully-Russ co-presented “Learning Life History as a Method for Educating the Scholar‐Practitioner” at the Annual European Society for Research on the Education of Adults Life History and Biographical Research Network Group Conference in Canterbury, England on March 1st.

DISSERTATIONS

Dr. Ellen Scully-Russ was a co-editor of Advances in Developing Human Resources 13(3). This is a special issue of the Journal which focused on Scholarly-Practice in Human Resources Development. Dr. Scully-Russ was also co-author of the introductory chapter, which is titled, “A Scholar-Practitioner Case Approach: Implications for Advancing Theory and Research Through Informed Practice.”

 

Dr. Diana Burley, along with Dr. Julie Ryan (SEAS) was awarded a National Science Foundation grant for the HOL– Integrated Studies in Cybersecurity project. The HOLISTiC Executive Cyber CORPS program aims to produce cybersecurity leaders who have a strong technical foundation, expertise in key human and organizational concepts, and a portfolio of advanced research and analysis skills. The program also aspires to foster a community of practice that engages students and cybersecurity experts in collective dialogue to drive the development of practically-based research. Ultimately, the researchers seek to establish HOLISTiC as a model program of study. Dr. Burley is co-principal investigator with Dr. Ryan, and Dr. Susan Swayze is serving as project evaluator.

 

Dr. Michael Marquardt’s 2005 book, Leading with Questions has been selected as one of
the "100 Best Business Books of All Time" by two book review companies: 100‐Must‐Reads and Sources of Insight.

 

Dr. Ellen Scully‐Russ authored “The dual promise of green jobs: A qualitative study of federally funded Energy Training Programmes in the U.S.” in The European Journal of Training and Development 37(3), based on her Department of Labor Green Jobs study.

Released February, 2013, Exploring Strategic Thinking: Insights to Assess, Develop, and Retain Army Strategic Thinkers, a publication of the United States Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, included chapters by two HOL faculty. Chapter Two - Strategic Thinking: Requirements, Development, and Assessment - was
authored by Dr. Ellen Goldman, and Dr. Andrea Casey authored Chapter Six, Creating an Organizational Culture to Support Strategic Thinking. The research publication includes a variety of perspectives that highlight areas of convergence and divergence, as well as exemplar techniques, processes and insights that inform and change the conceptualization and practice of strategic thinking in the military.
