SYMPOSIUM SPEAKERS

Dr. John Boswell came to GW in 1957 as an administrator in the College of General Studies and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of History and Education. In 1962, he became Assistant Professor of Education. In mid 1980s, he jointly created the program in Education Policy. From 1962-2002, he became a Professor of Education, served as Department Chair for two terms, and chaired the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate. He retired in May 2001, after which he continued teaching in the ELP.

Dr. Schwandt founded/teaches in ELP. Before GW, he served at the U.S. GAO. He has presented his Org Learning Model domestically and abroad, and has published 60+ scholarly works. Recently, he wrote “Learning as an Organization: A Journey into Chaos” in the book, Learning Organizations. He's a charter member of the Academy of HRD and belongs to numerous orgs, including the Academy of Management. His research includes strategic thinking, org learning/development, leadership, & systems analysis.

Sharon Confessore, PhD. is Director of Change Management and Learning at Bon Secours Health System, Inc. She provides org development, leadership development experiences, and learning systems development to the Clinical Excellence Unit, including EHR implementation. She is also establishing their accountable care organization (ACO). Sharon has also been a Senior Director at Kaiser Permanente, an Associate Professor/Director at GW’s GSEHD, and an author on self-directed learning.

Dr. Chalofsky has been with the GW HOL program for 20+ years. His research involves developing meaningful workplaces and increasing capacity for learning, facilitation, and team development. He has been president of the local American Society for Training & Development, and is a founding member of the Academy for Human Resource Development. His consulting work has included many corporations including The World Bank, National Institute for Work and Learning, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Mary Uhl-Bien is Professor and Howard Hawks Chair in Business Ethics and Leadership at the University of Nebraska. Her research focuses on complexity leadership, relational leadership, and followership, and has appeared in such journals as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, and The Leadership Quarterly. She has also partnered with Booz Allen Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, Bank of America, Disney, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, & Stryker.
